ABSTRACT
Generating hypertext automatically
Harold Thimbleby
We consider two types of automatic hypertext generation:
- Free-form documents, almost entirely written by hand.
- Here the approach is to generate links and navigation aids
automatically, and to permit analysis of the document's
structure. We make the observation that many author
features are equally good as reader features, for example,
automatic committment reminders.
- Formulaic documents, almost entirely written
by computer.
- Here the approach is to take (for example) a
formal specification of a system and generate NL hypertext
documents automatically.
As live examples, we shall demonstrate:
- the Royal Society of Arts Web pages, which were generated from a
database, and their analysis in Mathematica
- hypertext manuals generated from logic specifications
of the Airbus A320 braking subsystem.
